Lancashire Launches AI and Digital Skills Hubs for Secondary School Pupils

Secondary school students across Lancashire are set to gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), coding, and virtual reality, thanks to a new initiative designed to boost digital skills and career readiness.

The Lancashire MEGA Hubs programme, announced by Lancashire County Council, aims to equip young people with vital tech capabilities through immersive learning opportunities. Every secondary school in the county will have access to the programme, which includes lessons in cybersecurity, coding, machine learning, and an after-school Cyber and Esports Academy.

Council leader Phillippa Williamson expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, calling it an “incredibly exciting” step that aligns with the council’s strategic vision. “This project brings real opportunities to our young people,” Williamson said. “It helps us meet growing demand from employers for digital, cyber, and tech skills, and positions Lancashire as a leader in technological innovation.”

Integrating Tech into the Classroom

Beyond extra-curricular activities, digital learning will be integrated into traditional STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The initiative is supported by £550,000 in funding from the Lancashire Economic Growth & Development Investment Fund (LEGDIF) and will run through the end of the 2026 academic year.

The programme also places a strong emphasis on equity and accessibility, with the goal of creating a more inclusive digital workforce.

Industry Collaboration with IN4 Group

Lancashire County Council is partnering with IN4 Group, a regional tech talent and innovation hub, to deliver the MEGA Hubs. IN4 Group CEO Mo Isap said the initiative is about ensuring that every young person, regardless of background, has access to future-ready skills.

“We’re passionate about empowering young people to achieve their potential,” Isap said. “The MEGA Hubs will deliver tech-first experiences across emerging technologies, helping to bridge the digital skills gap and build a diverse, dynamic workforce.”

With the MEGA Hubs now launching across Lancashire’s schools, the region is taking a bold step toward ensuring the next generation is not only digitally literate but fully prepared to lead in a tech-driven world.
